Official classification of Bordeaux wines from 1855
The official classification of Bordeaux wines from 1855 is the reference established at the time at the request of the Emperor Napoleon III for the 1855 Paris World Fair. Wine merchants established a classification according to the Reputation of the castles and the price of their production, which at the time was directly related to quality.
The wines were classified in importance from the first to the fifth. All the reds came from the Médoc region except Château Haut-Brion des Graves. The whites, then marginal, were limited to the sweet variety of the Sauternes and Barsac on two levels.
Published on April 18, 1855, two changes have taken place since the creation of the ranking: in September 1855 Château Cantemerle was added as fifth vintage and in 1973 Château Mouton Rothschild obtained a second crop. The vineyards have changed area without being taken into account. This ranking and the 88 castles (61 reds and 27 whites) that are part of it are a favorite topic for amateurs.
