Information on Château l'Evangile **:
Although the wines of Pomerol have never been the subject of any classification, Château L'Evangile is undoubtedly one of the best wines of the appellation. The estate was created in the middle of the 18th century by a family from Libourne, the Léglises, who contributed to the constitution of the Pomerol vineyard, alongside the families who owned the estates of Petrus (Arnaud family), La Conseillante (Catherine Conseillant) and Trotanoy (Giraud family). Until then called Fazilleau, the estate took the name of the Gospel at the very beginning of the 19th century, under the leadership of the lawyer Isambert, who remained the owner until 1862. Bought by Paul Chaperon, Château L'Evangile remains in the bosom of his descendants, the Ducasses, until 1990. Since then, the Château Lafite Rothschild team has gradually regained control of the estate. The former owners were already perfectly aware of the remarkable potential of this exceptional terroir, made up of a deep and heterogeneous subsoil of gravel mixed with clay and sand. Even the dreadful frosts of the winter of 1956 could not completely overcome the Château L'Evangile vineyard. Louis Ducasse took over the domain, which was still depleted, renewed the vineyard and raised it to its best level in a few years. A level that will not know any decline, even at his death in 1982, since his wife takes over with remarkable tenacity. Today, the new team harvests as late as possible in order to obtain perfectly ripe grapes, a limited yield and aging for 18 months in 70% new oak barrels. The clearly stated ambition of raising the Gospel to the highest rank of the appellation seems to have been achieved: these wines of great richness, with a dark ruby color and aromas of raspberry, blackberry, sometimes liquorice, show an impressive keeping capacity.
